Character Information

Illarion Vale is a tourist – that is, his primary reason to keep traveling the planes is because he likes to see the sights. He’s not looking for anything in particular, just the next vista of wonder, over the next horizon. Because, like any tourist, he tends to “do” places rather quickly, taking in a few of their most notable sites, he is exceedingly well traveled for a Planeswalker of his relative youth. Despite this, he often gets wrapped up in the events of whatever plane he finds himself on, and while me may not want to meddle from a philosophical point of view, he almost always does.

Illarion is not a powerful mage, having not been one at all before his Planeswalker spark ignited. He can use some illusions (often detailed but never large) and knows some basic pyromancy for self-defense, which he prefers not to have to use, abhorring the idea of employing magic in a lethal manner. He is, however, an exceedingly good Planeswalker – Illarion can take at least one other, non-planeswalker human with him when he travels the planes, inflicting only minor discomfort on his passenger. He can planeswalk to the same plane he’s on, in effect mimicking teleportation with an accuracy of 1-3 miles from his intended point of arrival, and he can planeswalk decently quickly.

In the M:EM Present (and Ordinary Day), Illarion is 25 years old. He was 22 in Corrosion, 17 in Homecoming, and ascended at the age of 14.

Known Interactions

  • Kyara Vale: Illarion’s older sister. Traveled with him for some time (From Homecoming to Corrosion), and quickly came to self-identify as a tourist as well. Kyara is more fiery than Illarion and more willing to get involved in a world and its struggles. While she travelled alongside Illarion for the joy of discovery, she doesn’t even pretend to follow his ideal about not messing with the worlds they come across. SPOILERS FOR CORROSION: Kyara is now a Phyrexian monstrosity, compleated during the events of Corrosion. She retained some of her personality, but with Phyrexian outlooks and priorities lensing those traits. Over time, she is likely to become Khaar Zaroch’s right hand. See: Shandrovol.
  • Marina Ells: Illarion’s “It’s complicated” – she has so far not accompanied him off-plane, at least not for very long (no word on day trips). A childhood friend from Illarion’s home plane, Marina and Illarion are very, very close despite the sporadic and somewhat infrequent nature of their meetings. They've been more or less ‘going steady’ since Homecoming (Illarion has visited more frequently than the once a year goal he set, often between any two worlds), so while Illarion has constantly run into female supporting cast and potential traveling companions, he more or less considers himself ‘taken’. (Marina feels the same way).
  • Ophelia Lumara: A native of Shandrovol. SPOILERS FOR SPOILERS FOR CORROSION: Ophelia was the Speaker for the God, chosen voice of the God King of Shandrovol, who would eventually consume her soul utterly. With a Phyrexian takeover on the horizon, Ophelia took a chance to destroy the God King, freeing herself but taking away her world’s best hope of survival. After Illarion refused to take her away from Shandrovol, she decided to fight for the life she had chosen. Illarion regrets leaving her behind as, whatever she may have done, she was still an ordinary person and didn’t deserve to be left to Phyrexia. Little does Illarion know, Ophelia is still alive on Shandrovol: she’s clever and resourceful and possesses some fragment of the God King’s wisdom from the many times his spirit possessed her, and most other survivors follow their former Speaker willingly, none knowing that she and not Phyrexia is the reason the God King burned. She’s also potentially dangerously insane.
  • Mary Shaw: A native of Keter who Illarion briefly travelled with during the events of “Ordinary Day”. Mary turned down an offer to see other planes alongside Illarion for a time.
  • Khaar Zaroch: SPOILERS FOR SPOILERS FOR CORROSION A Praetor-entity that likely bears Illarion something of a grudge. Khaar Zaroch is the current Father of Machines on Shandrovol, and commands the Phyrexian forces on that plane. Khaar Zaroch prefers to spread through cult influence, retaining many human or near-human servants who vie for promotion and compleation. During the events of Corrosion, the God King’s actions forced Khaar Zaroch’s hand and prematurely ended his subtlety, but having taken the Golden City, he has returned to, admittedly more aggressive, proselytizing in order to force the conversion of the remaining Shandrovol populations.
