Character Information

Appearance and Description

Beryl is a woman in her late twenties. She is diminutive in stature – shorter than average, and with a gaunt physique. Her features are angular and austere, and her skin is pale. She has thin, wispy black hair which she generally wears long and combed-down over the left half of her face, in an attempt to conceal her ruined left eye and the scar surrounding it. The eye itself is clouded and milky; she cannot see out of it and cannot close it. The scar tissue which rings it is irregular, red, raised, and painful. Beryl's functioning right eye is a deep green color, after which she was named.

She has a second prominent scar running across her chest – a thin, red line marking the place where she was stabbed through the heart. She has a third scar on the palm of her right hand, where her skin was burned when she unlocked the power within a Fire Diamond.

Beryl's style of dress is mostly unremarkable. She generally wears utilitarian clothes and values warmth and durability over style or quality of manufacture. She often wears black hobnail boots and black fingerless leather gloves. She has enchanted her gloves with wards against fire.

Her only notable possession is an old, fragile book bound in red leather: her mother's copy of Thineaus's Arcanum Obscurata, a pseudo-historical collection of stories and myths about ancient magicians and their spells, and a work regarded by most modern scholars as, at best, unreliable, or, at worst, outright fiction.

Personality

Beryl is instinctive and quick-witted, but also private and guarded by nature. She can be distrustful of others, but is more distrustful of herself, and her main motivation in avoiding the company of others is to attempt to protect herself and those around her from her own power. She rarely loses her temper, and tends to assume that she herself is ultimately responsible for tragic events which occur in her presence. However, in moments of extreme emotional agitation, she often finds her magical abilities both amplified and only partially under her conscious control.

If asked about herself or her past, Beryl is often cagey and vague. Partly out of a desire for privacy, partly out of a sense of shame, and partly out of fear that others will come to know her too well even as she struggles to know herself.

Beryl is descended from House Trevanei, a powerful aristocratic family on her home world, Aliavelli. Her mother, Moira Trevanei, served as High Sorceress and was a notable figure in political and magical circles; her older sister, Astria Trevanei, is the current High Sorceress's representative at the Court, the seat of civic governance.

As a young girl, Beryl showed significant aptitude for enchanting but less skill with other forms of spellcasting. At age 8, however, she accidentally cast a powerful, uncontrolled fire spell which left her scarred and partially-blind, and which killed her mother and infant brother. As a consequence, Astria punished Beryl by stripping her of her family name and keeping her under house arrest until adulthood.

Now part of the Nameless underclass, Beryl scratched a living as an enchanter and apothecary before her ascension. Since the ignition of her spark, Beryl has embarked on a quest to better understand herself and her own powers, to come to terms with her past, and to seek reconciliation with her older sister.
